What is floor marking tape?
Floor marking tape is a durable adhesive tape used to mark aisles, hazard zones, traffic lanes and storage areas on factory, warehouse and workplace floors. It is usually made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) with a strong rubber adhesive, and comes in solid colours or black-and-yellow stripes to communicate safety information at a glance.
It is used as a faster, cleaner alternative to painted floor lines. Unlike paint, it can be applied in minutes, needs no drying time, and can be removed without residue when a layout changes.
What do the colours of floor marking tape mean?
Floor marking colours follow widely accepted safety conventions (based on OSHA and 5S/Lean workplace standards). While Malaysia has no single law mandating exact colours, most factories and warehouses follow this common scheme:
- Yellow — Aisles, walkways, traffic lanes and work cells. The most commonly used colour.
- Black & Yellow stripes — Physical or health hazard areas; warns workers to take caution.
- Red — Danger, stop points, or the location of fire-protection equipment.
- Red & White stripes — Areas that must be kept clear for safety or compliance (e.g. in front of electrical panels, fire extinguishers, eyewash stations).
- Orange — Machinery hazards, or items held for inspection.
- Blue — Caution; often marks out-of-service or work-in-progress equipment.
- Green — Safety equipment locations such as first-aid stations.
- White — Equipment, workstations, racks and fixtures.
Keeping the number of colours small makes them easier for staff to remember. Many facilities post a colour key on the wall as a reminder.
Where is floor marking tape used?
Floor marking tape is used across many industries in Malaysia, including:
- Manufacturing and factories — Marking assembly lines, work cells and forklift lanes.
- Warehouses and logistics — Separating pedestrian walkways from vehicle routes, marking storage bays.
- F&B and central kitchens — Hygiene zones, equipment placement, traffic flow.
- Retail and wholesale — Queue lines, stock areas, back-of-house organisation.
- Construction sites — Hazard warning and restricted-area marking.
It is a core part of 5S and Lean workplace systems, where clear visual organisation improves both safety and efficiency.
How do you choose the right floor marking tape?
Consider these factors:
- Traffic level — Heavy forklift traffic needs a thicker, more durable tape; walkways can use a standard grade.
- Surface — Smooth sealed concrete holds tape best. Rough or dusty floors need cleaning first for good adhesion.
- Width — 48mm (about 2 inches) is the most common; wider tape is more visible in busy areas.
- Colour — Match your facility’s safety colour scheme (see above).
- Indoor vs outdoor — Choose a tape rated for sunlight and moisture if used outdoors.
A good-quality PVC floor marking tape resists abrasion, holds firmly on uneven surfaces, and removes cleanly without leaving adhesive behind.
How is floor marking tape applied?
- Clean the floor thoroughly — remove dust, oil and grease so the adhesive bonds properly.
- Plan your layout before applying; mark reference points if needed.
- Apply the tape slowly and press down firmly along its length.
- For high-traffic areas, press the edges down well to prevent lifting.
Proper surface preparation is the single biggest factor in how long floor marking tape lasts.
